The Tanzania Library Association (TLA) is pleased to invite you to attend a workshop training on Cataloging and Classification in Digital Environments to be held from 28 to 31 August 2023 in Tabora Region.
Course description
This course aims at equipping librarians and information professionals with skills and knowledge in cataloging and classification in digital library environments. Its major purpose is to enable librarians to identify, select, catalogue, classify, assign subjects/keywords, and retrieve online library resources. The skills acquired will be applied to manage electronic resources in library automated systems, digital repositories, and other online databases
Course objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Define principles and practices of cataloging and classification of electronic resources
- Understand the formats and structures of electronic resources
- Understand the structure and formats of metadata standards
- Use metadata elements to describe electronic library resources
- Apply subject analysis principles in organizing, storing, and accessing electronic resources
Course content
- An overview of cataloguing and classification practices in digital environments
- Metadata standards (MARC, RDA, Dublin Core, METS, MODS etc.) applied in digital libraries
- Structure and formats of electronic resources in libraries
- Using the internet for cataloguing and classification of library resources
- Subject analysis fundamentals
- Controlled and uncontrolled vocabularies
- Authority controls in library automated systems
- Taxonomies, Folksonomies, and Ontologies
- Access to online resources using retrieval languages
Intended audience
The course is designed to cover skills, especially useful to those new to cataloguing and classification in digital environments but with requisite knowledge and skills of cataloguing and classification. The course will also be a useful review for experienced cataloguers and classifiers, especially those who supervise or train other cataloguers and classifiers, and those who have not practiced cataloguing and classification in digital environments. This course is also aimed at librarians who are cataloguing, classifying, or working with bibliographic information exchange.

This is designed as a four days workshop consisting of instructions and hands-on activities
